MALANG HISTORICAL TOUISM - MOST FAMOUS TEMPLES

Not only museum, we can also go to other several places to enjoy our historical tour. Temples (or in Indonesia we call it Candi) are also a good choice for the tourist to visit. Indonesia is rich with historical relics such as temples, especially in Malang. The weather is fresh and the temples are beautiful so the tourist will be able to enchanted. The temples in Malang save a million history that hasn't been revealed.

The architecture of Hindu temples was very interesting. They have their own meaning for each part. Besides ambiance and also the atmosphere of ancestral values there is very pronounced. It is seen from the frequent ritual performed on certain days. Every temples also guarded by the caretaker (we call it juru kunci) that will help the tourists if they want to know more about the temple. So you can travel while learning broaden your history. Interesting, right?

Now here are 3 amazing temples in Malang that I can recommend you to visit :

1. Singhasari Temple

Singhasai temple is one of Hindu-Buddhist temple that was built in 13th-century. This temple is located on Jl. Kertanegara, Candirenggo Village, Singosari District, Malang Regency, East Java. It's  about 10km north from Malang city, on the valley between Tengger-Bromo mountain in the east and Arjuno-Wlirang in the west, with elevation 512 meters above the sea level.

You should visit this temple when you come to Malang, because this temple has saved the historical story that always remembered by Malang public. Still and all, Singhasari temple is a symbol of the existence of Malang Regency from years ago. Or we can say that this temple is the start point of Malang Regency. This temple also has beautiful relief that describe the great of Singhasari Kingdom at years ago.

Singhasari temple or people  also known as Kendedes temple was mentioned in Javanese poem Negarakertagama canto 37:7 and 38:3 and also in Gajah Mada inscription dated 1351 and discovered in the temple's yard. According to this sources, Singhasari temple is funerary temple of King Kertanegara (ruled 1268-1292), the last king of the Singhasari dynasty, whose assassinated in1292 by Jayakatwang of Gelang-gelang and finally led to the establishment of Majapahit rule. Singhasari Temple is free to enter, but you are encouraged to sign the visitors book and leave a donation. Gates are open at 07:30 am until 04:00 pm.



2. Jago temple

Jago temple or that also called as Jajaghu temple was constructed in 1275-1300 AD. It lies at Jago Village, Tumpang District, about 22km from Malang City. It believed as the burial place of King Wisnuwardhana (fourth king of Singhasari Kingdom) ashes. The peculiarity of this temple is its top which is the only remaining part of it. Based on the stories of local residents, it is because of lightning. This temple was originally established on the orders of King Kertanegara to honor his father, King Wisnuwardhana.

If you only have time to visit one temple, this temple is the one to choose. Because this is the largest and most impressive of those surrounding Malang and features an abundance of intricate reliefs depicting both Hindu and Buddhist image. This temple also extremely interesting that it has ornament similarities to those of Penataran Temple in Blitar Regency. This temple is also a popular spot for photographs just like pre-wedding.

Tourists or foreigners are required to sign the visitors book and leave a donation, and the gates are open at 07:30 am until 04:00 pm.



3. Kidal Temple

Kidal Temple is a Hindu temple that was built under the Singhasari dynasty. It is located in Rejokidal Village, Tumpang District, about 20km east of Malang, near by Jago Temple. This temple was built around 1248 and restored in the 1990s. Actually this temple is 17 meters height, but now it's just 12,4 meters left. Kidal Temple is also one of Malang's historical temple that save history value. 

As the name Kidal which means left in Javanese, we read the reliefs of this temple start from right to left (anti clockwise). The story is about Garudeya that save his mother from Kardu. This temple also has a fine Garuda sculpture, menacing Kala heads and mandala reliefs on each side. The caretaker mentioned that the original sculpture now sits in a museum in the Netherlands. If you want to see how great is it, you can visit this Kidal Temple. It's not only because of the temple but also the attractive scenery on the drive here, you'll see the rice, corn, and sugar cane fields that is worth the trip itself.

If you want to visit this temple you can come here on Sunday to Thursday at 07:00 am until 04:00 pm; Friday at 07:00 am until 04:30 pm. But it has a daily closed at 12:00 - 01:00 pm.



How to Get There?

To go to all of those temples you can use angkot (local public car). It is possible form the rjosari Terminal, but sometimes you'll need to wait until the angkot full before they depart. If you want to go faster you can use ojek (motorbike taxi) or taxi that you can also order it by an application on your smartphone.

For Singhasari Temple : you can choose the green angkot which display "Singosari" depart regally during daytime. It costs IDR 5000 and it will take around 30 mins drive. You just need to tell the driver that you're going to go to Candi Singhasari, and they will drop you at the road side then you should walk like around 300 meters to the temple.

For Jago Temple and Kidal Temple : you can choose the white angkot to Tumpang market. It costs IDR 7000 and it will take around 1 hour drive. From the market, you should walk 300 meters to Jago Temple. But if you want to go to Kidal Temple, you should change your angkot at Tumpang market to a brown angkot that costs IDR 5000 and takes 20 mins drive. Don't forget to tell the driver that you want to go to Candi Kidal.
